How Robotics is Transforming the Construction Industry

Construction robotics has gained traction over the last few years as they become more advanced and available. With the technological advances in this industry, robots are designed for almost every aspect of the construction process. Robots are used in a multitude of tasks that are both dangerous and tedious, not only making the industry faster and more efficient but also safer for workers. Some of the machines being used in the field today are:

Construction Robotics Used Today

  • Autonomous Aerial Vehicles: AAVs are used primarily as surveillance tools. Surveying landscapes and sites give workers a bird's eye view with pictures and videos of potential issues before they become big problems.

  • Exoskeleton: Sometimes called an exosuit, this wearable suit with motorized joints is designed to enhance both strength and safety for workers. The reinforced external shell not only provides near superhuman strength and protection, but it's also great for posture. Though it may seem like something out of science fiction, this device is hailed as a construction site staple.

  • 3D Printing Robots: Several different approaches are being taken with this new technology. One example of a 3D printing robot being used in sustainable construction is that developed by researchers at Cornell University. While others use an articulated arm to move the print head around, this robot uses a gantry-type system to move the print head along rails. Cornell’s robot is designed to be modular and scalable, allowing it to print structures of varying sizes and shapes with materials including but not limited to concrete, sawdust, foam, and clay. While some robots print entire structures (you read that right), others are utilized to create intricate concrete molds or detailed architectural models. This technology can potentially significantly reduce waste and carbon emissions in the construction industry.

  • Autonomous Earth Moving Machines (AEMs): Using onboard AI, AEMs such as autonomous excavators can do everything from digging a basement to laying pipe to mining. With AI at the joystick, excavating sites has never been more precise or efficient.

The Benefits of Construction Robotics

Construction robotics comes with many benefits, including:

  • Increased safety: Construction robotics minimizes the need for human workers to be exposed to dangerous environments.

  • Increased efficiency: This new technology is fast and precise by optimizing processes and minimizing human error.

  • Reduced costs: Reducing labor costs and minimizing human error save an untold amount of money on projects

The Challenges of Construction Robotics

While the benefits are appealing and plenty, this new tech has drawbacks. These are the biggest challenges to be expected with construction robotics:

  • Lack of standardization: As construction robotics is still a relatively new technology, no industry standard exists for models or programming.

  • High cost: Using robotics saves money in the long run, but the upfront cost can be prohibitive for some companies.

  • Programming: A specific skill set is required to program software used in robotics.

Conclusion

Robotics are transforming the industry, making it safer and more efficient. With technological advances, robots do complex and difficult tasks with greater accuracy and speed. With challenges like high upfront costs and difficulties programming, it’s more apparent every day that the benefits outweigh the risks.
